EMIRATES ORDERS 10 BOEING 747-8 FREIGHTERS

Dubai-based airline Emirates has ordered 10 Boeing 747-8 Freighters in a deal worth US$3.3 billion.

Ram Menen, vice president cargo for Emirates Skycargo confirmed the deal was signed at this week’s Farnborough Airshow in the United Kingdom.

The 747-8 freighter, Boeing’s answer to the troubled Airbus 380F will fly 8,275 km (4,475 nmi) with a maximum structural payload capacity of 140 metric tonnes (154 tons). Boeing claims the 747-8 Freighter offers 16 per cent more revenue cargo volume than the 747-400F with slightly greater range with equivalent trip costs and 15 per cent lower ton-mile costs than the 747-400F. This could be decisive for Boeing as it battles with rival Airbus.

With fuel costs running at record levels, airlines are looking for any cost savings to help them stay competitive. The 747-8 Freighter could be a game-breaker for Boeing with its lowest ton-mile costs of any freighter.

The first 747-8 Freighter will be delivered to launch customer Cargolux in late 2009.

The first planes for Emirates will begin delivery from late 2010.
