Qantas best for on-time performance

May 2010 on time performance over all routes operated by participating airlines (Jetstar, Qantas, QantasLink, Regional Express, Skywest Airlines, Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue) averaged 87.5 per cent for departures, and 85.7 per cent for arrivals, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics.

Cancellations represented 0.8 per cent of all scheduled flights. The equivalent figures for May 2009 were 87.2 per cent for departures, 86.9 per cent for arrivals and 1.2 per cent for cancellations.

The long term average performance for all routes since reporting commenced in November 2003 is 85.0 per cent for on time departures and 83.8 per cent for on time arrivals.

Of the major domestic airlines, Qantas achieved the highest level of on time departures for May 2010 at 89.7 per cent, followed by Jetstar at 86.9 per cent, then Virgin Blue at 86.4 per cent and Tiger Airways at 78.6 per cent.

The regional airlines were led by Regional Express at 88.9 per cent, followed by QantasLink at 87.9 per cent and Skywest at 87.1 per cent.

Qantas also achieved the highest on time arrivals among the major domestic airlines at 88.7 per cent, followed by Jetstar at 86.7 per cent, Virgin Blue at 85.4 per cent and Tiger Airways at 77.8 per cent. Skywest was the best performing regional airline for on time arrivals at 86.6 per cent, followed by QantasLink at 84.8 per cent and Regional Express at 83.5 per cent.

Virgin Blue had the highest percentage of cancellations for May 2010 at 1.2 per cent, while Regional Express had the lowest percentage of cancellations at 0.1 per cent.

Of the 54 routes that met the criteria for on time performance reporting in May 2010, the Perth-Port Hedland route had the highest percentage of on time departures (96.9 per cent), while the Darwin-Brisbane route had the lowest (66.1 per cent). On time arrivals were highest on the Perth-Darwin route (96.6 per cent) and lowest on the Kalgoorlie-Perth route (76.2 per cent).

Cancellations were highest on the Sydney-Melbourne and Melbourne-Sydney routes at 2.8 per cent, followed by Broome-Perth at 2.4 per cent and Sydney-Brisbane and Newman-Perth at 2.3 per cent.

Alice Springs Airport recorded the highest percentage of on time departures (93.2 per cent) and Proserpine Airport recorded the lowest percentage for on time departures (75.4 per cent).

Port Hedland Airport recorded the highest percentage of on time arrivals (95.0 per cent) and Wagga Wagga Airport recorded the lowest percentage for on time arrivals (76.4 per cent).
